PURPOSE OF THE J-1 CULTURAL EXCHANGE VISITOR PROGRAM

Increase mutual understanding between cultures
• Create cultural and professional learning opportunities between citizens of the US and other countries
• Provide you with opportunities for professional development
• Share cross-cultural and professional knowledge you have gained from this experience upon returning home.

PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM: INTERN AND TRAINEE DISTINCTION
Trainee Category
• Degree + minimum 1 year work
experience
• No degree + minimum 5 years
work experience
• Program up to 18 months*
• Enhances skills and expertise of exchange visitors through
participation in a structured and guided training based program
• Typically mid-level or management
Intern Category
• Student or Recent Graduate
• Program up to 12 months
• Meant to bridge the gap between formal education and practical work experience
• Typically entry level

PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM: PROGRAM ENTITIES

J-1 Intern/Trainee – This is you! A non-US resident – participant who
meets and maintains the J-1 intern/trainee qualifying criteria
• Host Company – A US organization willing to host international interns and trainees and participate in the J-1 Program
• Sponsoring Organization – German American Chamber of Commerce is the designated J-1
Internship/Traineeship Program sponsor. As your sponsor, we are
responsible for supporting and monitoring you during your program

English Proficiency

Internexus tests each applicant to determine their English level. If their English level is not high enough, Distance Learning Classes are required.
Training MUST be conducted in English.
